What we did at Paeter's on Saturday night besides making fried tofu and other goodies.
I told Paeter he should bust out the ceiling so we could really have a climbing wall.... not a bad idea!On Sunday I started a huge project. I grew up making applesauce but we always froze it. So this year I decided to teach myself to can it. For the next five hours I was rushing around the kitchen between washing jars, keeping them hot, making sure the water was boiling, cutting more and more apples, cooking apples, churning apples and all the while deperately hoping that the jars would seal. All those steps are basically going at the same time. At one point I called over Shannon to tell me what a sealed jar would feel or look like. That was really helpful. My friend Autumn was writing on her blog about wearing a bun and feeling like a spinster.... welll Autumn... I think I gotcha beat! I was wearing a bun and canning. That has to be the epitomy of spinstership! Anyways, we'll "spin" together!
First you have to cook down the apples and then put them through the churn.
I always make applesauce with the skins on so that it's pink.
Nice and Tight...
Canning is easy but a timely project. I had water boiling for 5 hours straight, plus many others things happening all at one time.
The finished product! My neighbor Shannon and I tried some..... wow!.....soooo good!

Melanie!! My fellow spinster! Oh, it is so nice to have some company on that one :)... Anyway, the applesauce looks awesome! It has been a while since I have been around anyone who cans... that is until I came up here! It is totally the craze here! Everyone and their uncle does it (well maybe I should say everyone and their aunt considering it is rare that you find a guy who does it!). But I am glad you have gotten into the canning spirit. Then you can enjoy some nice applesauce in the winter!
yep, I will be home for a week for Thanksgiving break (ya, Canadians celebrate it in October!). I will have to give you a buzz when I am home!
Love and miss you!
Hey spin ;) maybe you will get to taste some. Anyways, safe travels over "thanksgiving" It's nice you can come so soon. Anyways, blessings and keep smiling for Jesus! Love, the other spin ;)
by the way, i love canning! it's fun and the reward is great. It's takes a lot of time but it's worth it... just like gaining reward through spending time with Jesus:)
That applesauce looks pretty good. Maybe you should send some this way ;) Well, I FINALLY posted a new blog :) Have a great day!
Please, oh please, please, please save some for me! I haven't had any applesauce for over 9 months!!! :(
I am jealous! Sniffle...you canned! I need to make a concerted effort to do some canning next year. Peaches, tomatoes, apples....yum. You know, I can't believe I am evening bringing it up, but there is a fireplace in the basement as well...cut out the floor and the ceiling and have a 2.5 story climbing wall........... :|
So uh...are you going to share with your country fair princess? You look like a very slendor Betty Crocker!! LOL Just kidding...good job on the sauce!
I want to make applesauce, too! I hear apples are in season now in the mountains. But I don't have a canner, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that yet. And I have way too much GYC stuff to do right now... sigh...
Hey Elizabeth, I'm Betty Rocks because my applesauce rocks! so cheesy i know...
Joelle, i just used a big pot , no canner whatever that may be. Maybe I need one to make the job easier. thanks for the heads up on GYC!
Kim, just imagine,.... melanie goes through the line at the airport... "ma'am... that's not a solid so we'll have to take then" or if I did get the applesauce on the plane... the pressure is rising in the cabin and BANG... applesauce everywhere and people are so mad because well, there's pink goo all over. So after much deliberation, research and quiet time....jj.. I've decided that you better come here for a taste of my lovely sauce!! love ya!
tara and ruan, I will definitely save some sauce for ya!! Please.. i hope you come and stay with me a while. i guestroom is so much nicer now... no bugs or big spiders, no mosquitos or rats... just a big fluffy bed! Can't wait to see you. As it turns out I can only make GYC for the weekend because of work x-mas dinner. BIG bummer! really! I wish so much i could be there for the whole thing. i love the classes. have a wonderful Sabbath
